The Automatic Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker.

homemade_sof_server_icecream

This ice cream maker produces 1 1/2 qts. of soft serve ice cream, yogurt, sorbet, or sherbet in 35 minutes without the need for chemicals, salt, or ice, and allows you to mix your own toppings from three separate hoppers that automatically dispense nuts, cookie crumbles, and sprinkles through a funnel directly into a tube of frozen confection as it falls into a waiting bowl at the push of a button. The unit operates from a single switch, and its double-insulated freezer bowl holds its temperature (requires 12 hours of freezing prior) while mixing all the ingredients needed to make any of the products; a single lever dispenses soft-serve (harder ice cream must be removed from the freezer bowl). All parts remove easily for cleaning, and the device holds a stack of flat or sugar cones. Plugs into AC. Includes instruction booklet and recipe book. 18 1/4″ H x 9 3/4″ W x 9″ D. (14 1/2 lbs.)

I got one of these last year because i wanted a strong heater in a small package, small footprint, to use in my bathroom, because the built in heater stopped working. It’s perfect for heating a small room like that. Then i got another one for my bedroom, it’s quiet, strong, and small, it fit into a small space near the bed. Then, i got a third one for the living room. The living room is a large room, and i use the heater like a small fire place, it really pumps out the heat. It’s not going to heat the whole living room, but sitting next to it feels like sitting next to a small fire for warmth, very pleasant, not too hot when close to it, just a nice strong warmth. In the living room, the central heating doesn’t do that well heating the lower part of the room on a cold night, the heat rises and it can be set on a high temperature and still be cold where we sit, so we use these heaters to warm up our space, nice source of heat, very portable, lightweight, sturdy. No complaints, it’s perfect for what i use it for.

This is a handy little heater that serves its intended purpose well – heating a small room. I use it to take the chill off my computer room which is not usually heated like the rest of the house since I’m not in there all that often. The unit itself is plastic with a metal grille, but it feels very sturdy and well made. The fan noise level is acceptable. It is far from silent, but is quiet enough that it doesn’t interfere. The controls are straight-forward. One dial is the power dial which has 4 settings: Off – Fan – Low – High. The other dial is the thermostat with an infinite range of settings between – and +. (I’ve found that just below the halfway point is very comfortable, but then again, the winters in California aren’t exactly subarctic)

Heater review
I’m not sure if this will heat a room but it’s more than adequate for what I need it for. I’ve got it in an 8×10 home office setup where it sits underneath my desk which is configured as an L-shaped workstation. It does wonders for keeping bare feet and legs warm on cold hardwood floors. Once it get’s going, I keep it about 1-2 feet away on full blast which keep me toasty but not too toasty. My only minor complaint is that is it a little louder than I was expecting…similar to a fan or the sound you get in a computer room, but if I’m listening to music, I don’t really notice it.

small portable Heater review
Incredible little heater, it is completely silent and very efficient in heating even a medium sized room. The best thing about this portable heater is that it doesn’t make the room have that burned smell that many other heaters emit. The air smells fresh and the heat is warm and soothing, not stale. No cartridges or replacement filters or oils needed. So it’s a one-time purchase and works great!

porable tHeater review
I bought this last year and used it through the winter as a supplemental heat source in my 14×14 home office. It puts out reasonable heat with low noise and a small foot-print. It seems to compare adequately to other heaters of its size and price range.

Unfortunately, mine died after the first winter. While the fan operates in “fan” mode, neither the fan nor the heating elements operate when turned to a heat setting. I hope mine is a rare experience and that others get a greater life-span with their heater, but this is something to keep in mind if you want a robust heater that will last for years to come.

This also comes with a three year warranty. I did not pursue remediation through this warranty simply because I could not justify the time and energy to contact customer support, get an RMA, pack it, ship it, wait for a replacement. Given the price, it was better for me to just buy another heater. And that’s what I do.

And that’s another thing to point out. While I’m disappointed with the life-span of my particular unit, I was generally pleased enough with it while it operated to just fork over the cash for a replacement via Amazon for this upcoming winter. I hope this unit lasts a long time, but if it doesn’t, the $20-$30 spent on it will be far less than I would have spent on the cost of operating the furnace (which heats up every room whether I’m occupying it or not).

Electric Heater review
My office cube is so cold I needed a heater to keep from freezing. Wanted something small and with little noise. This heater is perfect. It works great, really puts out the heat. I keep it on the low setting, otherwise it gets too warm, so it can heat a much larger space. I highly recommend it.

Portable Heater review
Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater with Adjustable Thermostat I was pleased with this product. It is quiet, compact, and has a variety of heat settings. I use it to dry my dogs after their bath. Better than having to stand over them with the noisy hair dryer. They love it.

Apple and Potato Peeler

Apple Peeler, Potatoe Peeler review  –If you like apple crisp, pie, etc., this gadget is a MUST. I’ve been peeling, coring, and slicing apples by hand for years, but this takes all the hard work out of my favorite desserts. In seconds, the apple is all clean and ready to bake. Great for pears, too. I have a dehydrator and I’ve made dried pears and apples for Christmas gifts for people this year using this handy device. I even got my boyfriend to help me because it’s so fun to use…and he never cooks!

All of the blades are replaceable, so there is nothing to every wear out. I’m assuming this is the cast iron version of the device. I can’t vouch for the aluminum version. The cast iron model is like something my grandmother would have had…rare to find this kind of quality in a gadget these days. No plastic!

Potatoe Peeler Apple Peeler review–This is a great peeler. Cook’s Illustrated rated it as the best mechanical peeler. I had a very similar looking one that I bought last year, but it wasn’t as well made as the A505 and it didn’t work as well.

That said, these merchants are a total ripoff. This thing does not weigh 15 pounds and I have no clue why they are charging so much for shipping. I bought mine through cooking dot com, for only a few dollars more and with free shipping.

Interestingly, it appears as though Williams Sonoma stores also sell this peeler, though it is repackaged with their name one it. It still has “Back to Basics” stamped on the base, though.

Apple and Potato Peeler review–I’ve had one of these for years now, essential for handling apples in any amount …. the blade is still sharp, works like the day I bought it ….. so glad to see it’s more widely available, I would hate to be without one …. makes a great gift for ‘newbie’ households…. You won’t regret it ….

Hand Blender Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah hah, I’m all shook up

Well ok, maybe I am not all shook up so much as BLENDED up. I purchased this immersion blender after my older no name brand unit purchased at Wally World died in the middle of blending a pot of hot soup. I like that you can wash the blenders blade assembly in the dishwasher and the stainless steel shaft is not stained like so many of the ALL PLASTIC models. Another thing I love is the power of the unit and the sharpness of the blades; they will reduce a pot of cream of broccoli soup to a smooth consistency in nothing flat.

Oh and when I say broccoli soup folks, I MEAN broccoli soup. I put nearly two bunches of steamed broccoli in my soup and I only chunk it prior to blending with the immersion blender. This blender will puree` the soup to a perfect creamy texture in nothing flat. (Reserve a few pieces of the chunked broccoli to add back to the soup for texture purposes) I have also used it on my potato and asparagus soups with equally great results.

If you are looking for an immersion blender with lots of power and a “NO STAIN” Stainless Steel shaft then IMO, you cannot go wrong with this model from Cusinart.

Happy Blending!

Ciao!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangy-dang!,

Holy guacamole! I was a disbeliever, but now that I have this Cuisinart immersion blender, I am a True Believer. It is substantial yet quiet, and it works really, really well. It is easy to clean as the blender piece pops right off. I love that I can just place it into the pot and puree my soup right there! Awesome! Carrot soup, cauliflower soup, sweet potato soup have all fallen under my spell with this magic wand. Recommended.

Review:

Overall, I love this oven. Unless it breaks down on me, which only time will tell, I cannot think of anything drastically negative to say about it. Yes, it needs an interior light. Yes, the crumb tray slides out from the back. But those issues don’t come close to detracting from the oven and are minor compared to what this oven does right.

Cuisinart is doing this oven a marketable disservice by labeling it a “toaster” oven. Rather, this is a full fledged oven (in reduced size) that also happens to toast your bread too. Cuisinart has established a new category of ovens with this one. It has evolved way past the “toaster” stage.

I’ll try to cover everything I wanted to know about this oven when I was researching it:

AESTHETICS:
Aesthetically, this oven beats ALL the others on the market hands down.
If you are into how your appliance looks as well as how it performs, you will be VERY pleased with this one. It has a professional, sophisticated look about it, which is enhanced by the steel on steel color combination. No black or white plastic look to cheapen it.

FUNCTIONALITY:
Large interior.

The digital control pad is very well labeled and easy to use. The LCD display is a must have. I know most toaster ovens are operated by manual control dials but I would never want one. I like being able to punch in what I want and see it on display. I know more things can go wrong with digital controls but I’ll take my chances.

I do wish the rack automatically slid out when the door is opened. I hate having to use a pot holder just to get a piece of toast out of the oven. On the other hand, it’s no different than using a regular oven and no one complains about that. All in all, not a big deal. I plan on getting some thongs to grasp small items.

It is not as bright inside as it appears in the picture. This oven needs an inside light. I thought my kitchen lighting would be bright enough, but overhead lighting doesn’t reach inside the depths of the oven. It is very dark in there.

The crumb tray is a pain to access from back. Would it have killed the designers to have it slide out from the front?!

TOAST:
I am pleased with the toasting quality of this oven. The preset default setting is #4-Medium for 3 minutes. I generally use the higher setting #5 or #6, as I keep my bread frozen and prefer a darker crust, which require extra time. Incidentally, I do not need to add defrost.

The toast turned out fine. It was nicely toasted on both sides; one side being slightly more toasted than the other. However, it does take a bit longer to toast than I am willing to wait–close to 5 minutes (for setting #6). Rather, I prefer the ease of just dropping my bread in a toaster and less than 3 minutes later, it pops up hot and toasted. For a quick and simple piece of toast, I still use a regular toaster. No big deal because as I mentioned earlier, I do look upon this Cuisinart as more of a mini-oven than a toaster anyway. However, it perfect for toasting larger items like bagels.

PIZZA/BAKE:
I am not sure why they call it “Pizza/Bake” but it is the conventional baking function (not to be confused with “convection” baking). I was eager to test out the baking feature so made some Tollhouse cookies. It only took an amazing 3 minutes for the oven to preheat to 350 degrees. I mean, no sooner had I sat down when it was beeping that it was ready. I was stunned. My big oven takes about 10 minutes to preheat.

The Tollhouse instructions call for baking from 10-12 minutes. I typically cook them for 10 minutes in my big oven so I set the timer for 10 minutes. Good thing I checked on my cookies around 8 1/2 minutes as they were already well done!

I am amazed again at how well this oven heats up. One reviewer complained that their oven heated up 15-25 degrees lower than the stated temperature. However, I experienced no temperature problems at all. If this oven does have temperature inaccuracies, it doesn’t appear to affect its baking performance. In fact, since regular baking cooks so fast, I wonder if I will ever use the convection baking feature.

CONVECTION BAKING:
I haven’t cooked with it yet, but I turned it on to make sure it works and to hear how it sounds. There is a hum from the convection fan but it is no louder than the sound of my refrigerator compressor or my microwave when in use. Between washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, blenders, etc., if you aren’t used to hearing noises from your appliances by now, you must be an easily irritated person. LOL!

BROIL: Untested at this time. Will update later when used.

SAFETY:
Generally speaking, the Cuisinart may be a smaller oven but it is still an oven. This sucker does heat up to 500 degrees after all. Follow the same safety precautions as you would using your regular oven and you’ll be fine.

I guess the exterior of this oven gets hot to the touch. I didn’t notice. I have no intention on sitting on top of the toaster oven, or on the counter next to it. So the fact that the top and sides may get hot is no problem for me. The front of the toaster oven may get hot too, but just as I don’t touch the door of my regular oven during use, I have no intention of touching this door either.

I have no problems using the handle without worrying about burning my bare hands, though I admit I have small hands. Perhaps someone with larger hands might come in contact with the hot door and it doesn’t look like the metal band under the handle is heat resistant, which would have avoided this particular issue altogether. Be careful.

The top rack slot has a safety catch to prevent the rack from accidentally sliding all the way out. Strangely, the bottom slot does not.

The rack has raised corners. Good feature to prevent a pan from sliding off. Bad feature when inserting or removing a pan. Pans won’t simply slide in and out. You must slightly tilt it a bit. Tilting a pan full of hot liquids is never a good idea so you’ll have to carefully maneuver.

ACCESSORIES:
The broiler tray and drip/baking pan that comes with the oven is large. It is a very sturdy pan set. The middle of the pan is slightly raised to allow for drippings to flow to the sides–which will be helpful when using it as a baking pan to cook greasy items. I like the pan, but it’s a bit large for my everyday needs so I purchased a smaller pan set by Chicago Metallic (which is very nice incidentally). I will save the Cuisinart pan for larger “on the weekend” dishes–as I am only cooking for one typically during the week and don’t need to haul out a large pan.

INSTRUCTION BOOK:
Cuisinart includes an extremely thorough instruction manual covering everything you need to know. It also includes some very delectable recipes tailored for this oven. Their recipes caught my attention to such a degree that I went looking for more on Cuisinart’s website. Yummy looking recipes there too.

QUALITY:
Generally speaking, I feel safe and comfortable using this oven. Only time will tell how long it will hold up. Who knows, I wrote this rave review and next week the oven could break down on me. I hope not because I look forward to enjoying this oven for many years to come.

Kitchen design ideas

In 1953, House & Home magazine crowed, “The kitchen is losing one of its four walls.” Ensuing decades have unleashed a regular Jericho, to the point where I have a hard time recalling a custom-built house whose kitchen is not integrated into the living area, its walk-around island the Corian (or stainless, or marble) Mecca of family and friends.

kitchen-design-101-bulthaup-b2

The Frankfurt kitchen, designed by Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, was one of the first kitchens designed as a complete and efficient system.

kitchen-design-101-frankfurt-kitchen

Growing up, I didn’t know anyone with a great room. Our mothers disappeared into smallish, constrained spaces—–fitted cabinetry above, linoleum underfoot, appliances cheek-to-jowl on the counter—–and emerged sometime later to announce “Dinner!” (Multiple times, with increasing decibel levels.) Today, the kitchen holds such allure, I have to browbeat guests to move down to the sofa after dinner.

As early as the 1930s, Frank Lloyd Wright dubbed the kitchen the “workroom” of the house, and created airy, open-plan designs for House Willey and House Jacobs. The rest of the country caught up about 50 years later, just as women were fleeing hearth and home for the workplace. The larger living area encouraged quality family time, while the perfection of the extractor hood kept the smell of the fish from wafting.

kitchen-design-101-frank-lloyd-wright-kitchen

Interior of a prefab house showing kitchen looking out into dining room, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

In this, the golden age of Gordon, Emeril, and Padma, cooking is a spectator sport, and the kitchen is our stage—–even if, sadly, the family is more frequently focused on the microwave than the gleaming range beside it. Many of us spend more time perusing tile samples than learning how to roast a chicken—–and I’m guilty of believing that a new set of All-Clad cookware might have a magically osmotic effect on my culinary skills. (It didn’t.)

This is when we might heed German graphic design visionary Otl Aicher, author of The Kitchen Is for Cooking, who wrote: “The kitchen is a function of man’s social nature. Cooking is only a pleasure when others join in eating. And cooking is even more of a pleasure if others join in the cooking.” And all the design genius in the world is not going to get that fresh fish into the frying pan, or those well-scrubbed potatoes into the oven.
